A call is set up before voices meet.
Modern calls use signalling to request and manage a connection, while encoded audio travels as media. The exact architecture differs by technology and operator, but the functional layers are recognisable.
1. The phone presents a request
When a user taps call, the device does more than open its microphone. It asks the serving network to establish a session toward a destination. The device is already registered or attempts to register, and the network associates it with authorised service using subscriber credentials and current location information.
2. Radio reaches access infrastructure
For a cellular call, the handset communicates with a nearby radio site on resources coordinated by the network. “Nearby” does not always mean the visually closest tower; coverage, frequency, load and network policy affect selection. The radio link carries both control signalling and user media.
3. The destination is resolved
The dialled number is an address meaningful to telecommunications routing. Network systems determine where the call should be delivered, whether within the same operator, through an interconnection to another network or toward a fixed line. Number portability means the visible prefix alone may not identify the current serving provider.
4. The receiving side is alerted
The destination network locates the registered subscriber or endpoint and signals the device to ring. The sound heard by the caller may be generated according to network signalling; it is not necessarily the literal sound from the other telephone. When the recipient answers, the session state changes and media flow is established.
5. Speech becomes encoded media
The microphone turns pressure variations into an electrical signal. A codec represents speech digitally, usually compressing it for efficient transport. At the far end another device decodes the information and drives a speaker. Noise reduction, packet loss handling and network conditions shape what listeners hear.
6. Mobility may change the radio path
If a caller moves, the network can hand service between cells or radio resources. In modern systems that process involves measurement and control across access and core functions. A failure in handover can interrupt audio even when coverage exists on both sides of a boundary.
7. Release is part of the call
Ending a call sends or triggers signalling that releases assigned resources and finalises records used for operation and, where relevant, charging. A complete telephone call therefore includes setup, alerting, active media and teardown—not just sound moving in two directions.
