Selected turning points

A timeline with more than one kind of “first.”

An experiment, patent, public demonstration, commercial launch and mass adoption are not interchangeable. This sequence marks influential transitions without pretending the history was linear or globally simultaneous.

Before 1876 — many paths toward speech

Acoustic devices, telegraph research and experiments by multiple inventors established pieces of the problem. Priority remains historically contested because conception, construction and legal protection do not point to one simple moment.

1876 — Bell's US telephone patent

Alexander Graham Bell received US Patent 174,465. Laboratory work with Thomas Watson helped demonstrate intelligible electrical speech and fed into commercial development.

1878 — early commercial exchanges

Telephone exchanges allowed subscribers to reach more than one fixed endpoint. Operators became essential participants in connecting calls.

1890s — automatic switching patents

Almon Strowger's system helped establish subscriber-controlled automatic switching. Mechanical automation spread over decades rather than instantly replacing manual boards.

Early twentieth century — dial service expands

Rotary dialling translated digits into pulse trains. Consolidated desk sets and expanding local networks made the telephone a familiar business and household appliance, unevenly distributed by geography and income.

1940s onward — public mobile radio services

Vehicle-mounted radio telephones connected mobile users to the public network, but limited channels and bulky equipment prevented the capacity and portability later associated with cellular systems.

1973 — public handheld cellular demonstration

Martin Cooper of Motorola made a widely cited handheld cellular call. A demonstration marked technical direction; commercial devices and operating networks followed later.

1980s — first-generation commercial cellular

Analogue cellular networks and early handheld products such as the DynaTAC established personal mobile calling, initially at high cost and with substantial physical constraints.

1991 — commercial GSM era begins

GSM introduced a digital cellular system with portable subscriber identity through the SIM. The first commercial GSM call is associated with Finland in 1991, while broader rollout occurred over subsequent years.

1992 — early SMS

The first SMS message is commonly dated to December 1992. Text messaging later became a defining social use of digital mobile networks.

1990s–2000s — phone and computer converge

Communicators, PDAs and data-capable phones combined messaging, organisers and web functions. Feature phones expanded digital habits well before the large-touchscreen smartphone became dominant.

2007–2008 — touchscreen and app ecosystems accelerate

The iPhone's launch and later app-store model helped reorganise the phone around a large touch interface and downloadable software. Competing platforms shaped a new mass-market category.

2010s onward — SIM becomes embedded

eSIM specifications and operator support enabled remote provisioning on embedded secure elements. Physical SIMs continued alongside it, illustrating how infrastructure generations overlap.

How to use this timeline: treat each date as an entry point, then read the related chapter. Dates alone cannot show how long deployment took or how differently systems developed across countries.
